A dark mountain ridge rises beneath a restless sky, its snow-bright edges giving way to deep blue-green shadow. In the foreground, a small gathering of figures and animals brings the scale back to human life. Courbet’s Alpine view gives a living room or study a broad sense of distance, held within a strongly grounded composition.
Open-edition fine-art reproduction, printed and framed to order.
Cotton paper and pigment
Printed using the giclée process, with archival pigment inks on Hahnemühle Photo Rag 308 gsm. Made from 100% cotton, this acid- and lignin-free paper has a substantial weight and a soft, lightly felted surface. Its fine texture gives the image a quiet, tactile setting, while the matte finish is suited to the deep mountain blues, broken cloud and small transitions of light along the ridge, without a glossy paper sheen.
Frame and mat
The image sits within an ivory window mat, cut from 1.4 mm acid-free board with a 45° bevel. The bevel creates a crisp, sloping edge; the ivory surround leaves a visual pause before the frame. A Nielsen Quadrum wood frame supplies a slender 16 mm face and 25 mm depth. The narrow profile keeps the composition in focus while giving the finished piece a measured presence on the wall. Choose black for a clear outline, or oak veneer over solid wood for a warmer finish.

About the original artwork
Painted during Courbet’s years in Switzerland, the view looks south across Lake Geneva toward Les Dents du Midi. Dense passages worked with a palette knife contrast with the lower right, which remained unfinished at his death in 1877. That variation belongs to the original work.
